We are committed to continuing to develop innovative products that improve the performance of our customers’ products by imparting properties that extend product life spans, increase fuel efficiency and optimize resource conservation. We look to grow our involvement in the circular economy by developing opportunities to use waste or byproducts as raw materials. As responsible manufacturers, we understand our obligation to share comprehensive information on the health, safety and environmental aspects of our products.
Our R&D team uses a comprehensive, in-house product sustainability assessment framework to evaluate new product and process development projects for safety, environmental, and health impacts and includes more than 40 questions about sustainability impacts ranging from air emissions to circularity, potential safety risks to workers and other aspects.
From the assessments completed in 2022, 93% of active projects that were assessed had a positive sustainability benefit. We have shown year on year progress in striving toward our 2025 target that 100% of new products and process development projects will have a sustainability benefit.
Our engineered elastomer composites (E2C®) product line was named to the European Rubber Journal’s inaugural list of Top 10 Elastomers for Sustainability for the third time as well as our recently launched EVOLVE® Sustainable Solutions. E2C products target the heavy mining equipment space where investments in efficiency and automation create strong demand for high-performance rubber and our EVOLVE product line is a new technology platform for advancing sustainable reinforcing carbons.

We conducted a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) to examine the potential environmental impact of our E2C® solutions across the value chain of a long-haul truck tire. According to the LCA, the E2C DX9640 solution can significantly reduce emissions and environmental impacts. Key findings from the LCA demonstrated that the lower rolling resistance enabled by E2C solutions can improve vehicle fuel economy and results in up to 5% - 6% avoided GHG emissions. In addition, greater durability of tires made with E2C solutions reduces end-of-life tire volumes and decreases the net emissions from tire production required to outfit a truck over its total useful life by more than 10%.Learn More
We are actively working with customers serving the automotive industry to advance applications of carbon nanostructure (CNS) technology. This work led to the creation of a new family of unique materials that consists of a network of crosslinked carbon nanotubes manufactured using a proprietary process. ATHLOS™ CNS is an innovative new solution that will allow us to help customers better respond to the premium performance demands of next-generation plastic applications by enabling an optimal balance of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, conductivity, mechanical strength and processability. The addition of ATHLOS CNS to EMI shielding solutions enables significant lightweighting and miniaturization advantages by replacing or reducing the loading of traditional metal-based alternatives.
